В запись про Карла Роува пришел Арбат с вопросом "what about?"

В частности, Арбат просил прокомментировать "полное отсутствие осуждения со стороны левых политиков" бесчинств Антифа в Беркли.

Я ничего не писал об Антифа, и не планирую. По ряду причин. Мне эта тема не кажется важной в данный исторический момент. Мне не кажется правильным помогать российским ботам поддерживать интерес к этой теме. Любому, кто знаком с моим творчеством, должно быть очевидно, как я отношусь к самосуду.

That said, Нэнси Пелоси запостила стейтмент по этому поводу -- "Pelosi Statement Condemning Antifa Violence in Berkeley".

Я не знаю, считает ли Арбат конкретно Пелоси левым политиком, но думаю, что он ее считает квинтэссенцией левого политика. Так что вот этот стейтмент:

San Francisco — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement denouncing the violent protests carried out this weekend in Berkeley, California:

“Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts. The violent actions of people calling themselves antifa in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted.

“In California, as across all of our great nation, we have deep reverence for the Constitutional right to peaceful dissent and free speech. Non-violence is fundamental to that right. Let us use this sad event to reaffirm that we must never fight hate with hate, and to remember the values of peace, openness and justice that represent the best of America.”

Как можете видеть, никаких "many sides" тут не упоминается.

В 2011 Арпайо получил судебный запрет (injunction) от федерального судьи за практику задержки людей по национальному признаку. Такая практика нарушает права человека, о которых говорится в 4ой и 14ой поправке к Конституции.

In 2011, federal district Judge G. Murray Snow issued a preliminary injunction, telling Arpaio and his department to stop detaining people without a reasonable suspicion that a crime had been committed.
Snow has no ties to the Obama administration. He was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2007. Snow followed up with a permanent injunction in 2013.
"Any stop or detention based only on a reasonable suspicion that a person is in the country without authorization, without more facts, is not lawful," Snow wrote.
Arpaio’s practices, the judge wrote, violated peoples’ constitutional rights against unreasonable search and seizure and equal protection under law (the fourth and 14th amendments).

Арпайо демонстративно отказался следовать распоряжению Суда, за что был осуждён другим федеральным судьёй в 2017.

The evidence at trial proves beyond a reasonable doubt and the Court finds that Judge Snow issued a clear and definite order enjoining Defendant from detaining persons for further investigation without reasonable suspicion that a crime has been or is being committed; that Defendant knew of the order; and that Defendant willfully violated the order by failing to do anything to ensure his subordinates’ compliance and by directing them to continue to detain persons for whom no criminal charges could be filed. Because the Court finds that Defendant willfully violated an order of the court, it finds Defendant guilty of criminal contempt.

Вопрос об издевательстве над заключенным решался в другом федеральном суде (дело Graves v. Arpaio).

In October 2008, a federal court ruled that unconstitutional and life-threatening conditions in the jails necessitate federal court oversight to ensure that Sheriff Joe Arpaio and other county officials maintain safe and humane conditions and provide the thousands of detainees held there basic levels of medical and mental health care. And in 2010, a federal appeals court ruled that Arpaio and county officials are required to abide that order.

Шериф Арпайо проигнорировал и это решение. Издевательства продолжались. Графство, в котором он служил (Maricopa County) было вынуждено выплатить десятки миллионов по искам семей пострадавших от издевательского обращения. В 2016 ACLU подал в суд, требуя от графства принять меры по улучшению содержания заключенных, о которых говорилось в решении федерального суда в 2008.

Шериф Пензоне, которого в ноябре 2016 избрали на смену Арпайо, в этом году снес печально известную палаточную тюрьму и пытается принять другие меры для того, чтобы исправить ситуацию.
