В связи с этим предлагаю Вашему вниманию очередной отрывок из "2666". Как раз речь про самосуд. Caciques -- это банда такая мексиканская. Члены этой банды очень жестоко убили девушку. А их потом в тюрьме убили другие заключенные. Но не сразу. Конец отрывка выделен мной.

When his lawyer came to see him at noon, Haas told her he had witnessed the killing of the Caciques. The whole cell block was there, said Haas. The guards watched from a kind of skylight on the floor above. They took pictures. No one did anything. The Caciques got reamed. Their assholes were shredded. Are those bad words? asked Haas. Maybe there were more. Scratch six, make it twelve. And all of us from the cell block who watched the action and didn't do anything.
