Trump Approves Strikes on Iran, but Then Abruptly Pulls Back

President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.

As late as 7 p.m., military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations.

Officials said the president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries.

The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off, a senior administration official said. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the official said.

It was not clear whether Mr. Trump simply changed his mind on the strikes or whether the administration altered course because of logistics or strategy. It was also not clear whether the attacks might still go forward.

Asked about the plans for a strike and the decision to hold back, the White House declined to comment, as did Pentagon officials. No government officials asked The New York Times to withhold the article.

Снова о кризисе

Напомню мою недавнюю запись "О кризисе" по поводу информации NYT о том, что "The United States is stepping up digital incursions into Russia’s electric power grid". Информацию, которую, напомню, Трамп и трамписты назвали fake news.

И напомню твиты Фрума, которые я тогда же цитировал, только теперь я другое место в них выделю жирным шрифтом:

If the military is wrong about the president, if he should be trusted, then we have here the worst breach of civilian supremacy over the military since ... ever, right?

But if the military is right ... what do we have then?

If the president is not in command of cyber warfare operations against Russia, is he in command of the response to Iran's apparent provocations in the Gulf? If not, who is in command of operations in the Gulf - and by what authority?

Maybe Congress should summon the Secretary of Defense to explain? Oh right, there is no confirmed Secretary of Defense, and there hasn't been one since January 1.

Ага. Теперь переходим кo вчерашнему shit-show. Сегодня с утречка Трамп выступил с разъяснениями. В этот раз он не стал даже делать вид, что информация NYT не соответствует действительности. Я всю цепочку цитировать не буду, приведу только два последних твита:

We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights when I asked, how many will die. 150 people, sir, was the answer from a General. 10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone. I am in no hurry, our Military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world. Sanctions are biting & more added last night. Iran can NEVER have Nuclear Weapons, not against the USA, and not against the WORLD!

Во-первых, нет совершенно никаких оснований верить Трампу. А не верить ему есть множество оснований. Кроме того, что он просто патологический врун, есть и явный tell.

Но предположим на минуту, что Трамп рассказал, как дело было. Снова процитирую Фрума:

Who was running Iran policy *UNTIL* 10 minutes before H-Hour?

Was Trump even in the chain of command for this proposed operation? Doesn't sound like it.

Повторю вопрос Фрума, из первой цитаты: "If that's not a constitutional crisis, what is?" Кстати, министра обороны, как не было, так и нет, но зато исполняющий обязанности поменялся.

Что касается того, что а не надо ли признать, что Трамп молодец, что отменил операцию? Если у вас возникают такие мысли, проверьтесь на TDS.

Сама постановка вопроса совершенно абсурдна. Трамп -- главнокомандующий. Если он считает, что людские жертвы -- это чересчур для ответа на сбитый дрон -- OK, не проводи операцию, ты ж тут главный, это твое решение. Но начать операцию и отменить ее за 10 минут до удара, якобы узнав, что вероятно погибнут 150 человек -- это идиотизм, это демонстрация всему миру, что в самом высшем руководстве США правая рука не знает, что делает левая, причем не знает буквально в вопросах жизни и смерти множества людей.
