Incidentally, the wackiest *pro Trump* conspiracy theories reflect this dynamic. The Qanon conspiracy, which Roseanne fell for, assumes Trump’s praise for Russia and attacks on Mueller are fake and they’re teaming up on a secret investigation into Dems.

Я от себя подчеркну, что эта позиция трамписта, "I'm the samrt one, and I really understand what's really going on underneath the public statements", предполагает, во-первых, принятие того, что множество других трампистов -- дураки, которых Трамп сознательно обманывает.

Такой трампист должен чувствовать себя участником негласного договора с Трампом, чувствовать себя партнером Трампа -- он соглашается на то, что Трампу необходимо обманывать многих своих сторонников для достижения цели, в которой заинтересован "умный трамист".

Как пример -- обещание Трампа заставить Мексику заплатить за стену. У того же Часовщика было обсуждение (лень сейчас искать, так что по памяти). kodak2004 приводит ему ссылку на опубликованный Трмапом план принуждения Мексики к оплате. Реакция Часовщика: ну, кто же этому верил! то есть кто-то, может, и верил, но уж никак не я, так что меня Трамп не обманывал.

А во-вторых, для того, чтобы чувствовать себя "умным трампистом" совершенно необходим самообман, совершенно необходимо "just to tell yourself".
