В пятницу, после провала голосования за repeal and replace Obamacare, Трамп толкнул речь (полный транскрипт здесь) "to the Major Cities Chiefs Police Association".

Больше всего из этой речи, насколько я видел, цитировали этот эпизод.

Я, безусловно, согласен с тем, что по этому поводу написал rsokolov. Правда, я не особо критиковал бы аплодирующих полицейских, они попали в очень неловкую ситуацию -- президент пытается сказать им что-то приятное (уж как умеет), тут мало кто сумел бы верно отреагировать. И, к чести полиции, многие руководители полиции выступили с критикой этого призыва Трампа.

Но куда более важным мне кажется то, что отметил Yglesias:

You say, what happened to the old days where people came into this country, they worked and they worked and they worked, and they had families, and they paid taxes, and they did all sorts of things, and their families got stronger, and they were closely knit? We don’t see that.

Вот это fear-mongering -- это самая отвратительная черта трампизма. И, думаю, его главная черта. Но, действительно, многие не хотят этого видеть.

If fear-mongering is what it takes to reverse criminal Obama policies and return to normal law enforcement at the border then ok, I'll live with fear-mongering. And it's not like there was nothing to fear and it is indeed a huge monetary cost.

That's really sad. You would not excuse anti-Semitic rhetoric, even if it were used to justify some positive (in your view) policy changes, would you?

This is not a general anti-immigrant rhetoric. This is a specific rhetoric against illegal immigration. There's nothing wrong in pointing out that is expensive and unsafe.
If someone wanted to point out that Jewish immigration from SU was expensive and to some extent criminal I won't have a problem in principle but would disagree on facts. If some part of it were illegal I'd say - kick them out.
