Про Brexit: credit where credit is due

После Брекзита у меня был разговор с malyj_gorgan, в котором тот сказал, что, возможно, Брекзит будет полезен ЕС, так как в других странах посмотрят, что за порнография получилась у британцев, и откажутся от собственных идей выхода из ЕС.

Я хотел найти этот разговор, чтобы дать тут на него ссылку, но не нашел, к сожалению. Тем не менее, разговор такой точно был.

И, признаться, я очень скептически отнесся к тем словам malyj_gorgan. Мне казалось, что куда вероятнее, что события станут развиваться совсем в другую сторону -- экзиты будут следовать один за другим.

Однако, Великобритания еще даже не вышла из ЕС, а уже похоже на то, что malyj_gorgan оказался прав.

After Britain voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, its leaders were in a panic. It was mired in a migration crisis, and anti-Europe, populist forces were gaining. Britain’s decision seemed to herald the start of a great unraveling.

Now, that's what I thought. But that's not what is happening, not so far, anyway.

“Brexiters have done Europe no end of good,” said Denis MacShane, a writer and former minister for Europe in the government of Tony Blair.
“Frexit and Grexit and Italexit and all the rest of it are gone,” he said. “Leaving both the E.U. and the euro has been dropped like a ton of bricks, by populists from the right and the left, including Syriza in Greece and Podemos in Spain.’’

‘‘Everyone looks on Britain, which was the country of a stable Parliament, with sheer horror and boredom,” he added.

“Europe is still not a happy place, and a lot of people calling membership into question were elected, like Salvini, or done well,” Mr. MacShane said. ‘‘But Brexit has absolutely killed the idea of leaving.”
