Нет ли здесь антисемитизма / есть ли здесь антисемитизм?

Эта история выглядит особенно смешно in the age of Trump.

В ирландском edition британской газеты "The Sunday Times" вышла колонка автора Kevin Myers. Колонка называлась "Sorry, ladies -- equal pay has to be earned".

Чуть ли не сразу эта колонка вызвала скандал, в результате которого (тоже почти моментально) колонка была удалена с сайта газеты, а ее автор уволен. А за что, почему? Неужели феминистки дотянулись?

Никак нет, за антисемитизм!

Какой такой антисемитизм? Сейчас расскажу. Только лучше прочитайте сначала статью полностью. Я смог найти полный текст только в качестве фотографии, которая под катом, прочитать вполне можно.

Значит, статья написана на любимую многими моими читателями тему, о том, что женщины сами виноваты, то есть о том, что если женщинам платят меньше, то это потому что мужчины сильнее стараются больше заработать.

Евреи же в статье упоминаются, в общем, как пример для подражания. Вот этот абзац, который послужил причиной увольнения Майерса, плюс следующий абзац, чтобы дать представление о содержании статьи. Но, повторю, прочтите всю статью под катом.

"I note that the two best-paid women presenters in the BBC -- Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz, with whose, no doubt, sterling work I am tragically unacquainted -- are Jewish. Good for them. Jews are not generally noted for their insistence on selling their talent for the lowest possible price, which is the most useful measure there is of inveterate, lost-with-all-hands stupidity. I wonder, who are their agents? If they're the same ones that negotiated the pay for the women on the lower scales, then maybe the latter have found their true value in the marketplace.

Yet even using that word "marketplace" in the absurd world of the BBC is like putting "common sense" and "egalitarian feminism" in the one sentence without a negative, or collapsing with laughter.

Собственно, выделенная фраза -- это весь антисемитизм и есть.

И, don't get me wrong, я тоже считаю, что фраза антисемитская, и подобная статья не должна была бы появиться в любом уважающем себя издании. Но в данный исторический момент этот скандал выглядит смешно.

Вы помните выступление Трампа перед Republican Jewish Coalition's Presidential Forum?

Is there anybody that doesn't renegotiate deals in this room? This room negotiates them -- perhaps more than any other room I've ever spoken in.

Это ведь практически буквально та же самая идея, за которую уволили Майерса.

Конечно, в случае Трампа всегда легко найти an excuse:

"Here, context is everything," ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said. "In this case he is speaking to a group of Jewish Republicans, a significant portion of whom are business people. We do not believe he intended his comments regarding negotiations and money to relate specifically to their Jewishness, but we understand that they could be interpreted that way."

И я даже не говорю о сегодняшней статье в WP -- "Trump dictated son’s misleading statement on meeting with Russian lawyer" -- хотя и это, конечно, "Hello!"

Я говорю о статье, которую сенатор-республиканец, Jeff Flake, опубликовал сегодня в Politico. Собственно, заголовок статьи говорит сам за себя.

Приведу несколько цитат из статьи:

Ничего себе! Я знаю, что Jeff Flake всегда очень критично относился к Трампу, но, по-моему, до сих пор настолько критичных и однозначных выступлений от действующих республиканских сенаторов или конгрессменов не было. Или были?
