Разъяснение слов Обамы

К прошлой записи.

Полицейским не понравилось высказывание Обамы, так что его представитель объяснил, как это высказывание следует правильно понимать. Отсюда:
On Thursday, the White House tried to calm the hubbub over Obama's comments by saying Obama was not calling the officer stupid. Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama felt that "at a certain point the situation got far out of hand" at Gates' home.
Еще раз.

Обама:
the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home
Гиббс:
"Let me be clear, he was not calling the officer stupid, okay? He was denoting that . . . at a certain point the situation got far out of hand, and I think all sides understand that."
Более clear и не скажешь.

There is a huge difference between a stupid act, and a stupid person. Even very smart people are capable of acting stupid. I hope [livejournal.com profile] yakov_a_jerkov understands that.

Да понятно, что Обама не назвал полицейского дураком, это уж совсем было бы stupid. Но говорить, что Обама просто "was denoting that . . . at a certain point the situation got far out of hand, and I think all sides understand that" -- это, по-моему, означает считать своих слушателей stupid.
